The tiny tracking device that fits on your dog's collar can phone home to any online computer in the world.

The SNIF Tag was invented by a group of MIT Media Laboratory graduate students. The
founding group includes software architects, internet entrepreneurs, computer engineers and designers, and, of course, dog lovers brought together by the dream of a real-time device interfacing with online social networking.

The SNIF Tag can monitor your pet's activity and behavior at home and relay the information to a computer at work or virtually anywhere online in the world. This is good news for pet owners who feel the pang of guilt, and who worry about leaving their furry companion home alone.

The SNIF Tag can also serve to introduce SNIF Tag pet owners at off-leash parks and playgrounds.

SNIF Tag systems, priced at $199 will be made available at select Boston and New York City retail stores by Spring 2008.

The company will also be publishing a full API (application programming interface) for the product so that other websites can offer services for SNIF Tag owners.
