My friend Bill does 'lion's breath' -
with his mouth open, exhaling all of his breath from the depths of
his abdomen - with his dog facing his face, staring into his
eyes.
Bill believes Sandy was a guru in a former life.
She has a totally gentle, accepting nature. There's so much you
can learn from a dog.
We lay together on a large quilt in the shade of a
giant oak tree on the lawn of the Cinnamon house - so named for its
color. It's August in Iowa, 1975, when people shared more of
their lives together and named their children Leif and Meadow, and
their Dobermans, Apple and Tree.
Bill's long, semi-curly brown hair blends with
Sandy's long, shaggy brown fur. We empty our thoughts and open
ourselves to the universe: Slow moving clouds, birds; the
occasional gentle breeze moving the scent of flowers through the
humid summer air.
When I am at my computer, as I am now, I can still
go there. Not to live in the past, but to relive the
experience.
I am reminded of something my great grandmother
said back then, when she was in her 90's… 'Don't
let them kid you,' she said. 'These are the good old
days!' She was talking about electricity, cars and microwave
ovens. I was impressed that she said, 'We were farmers.'
Not, 'I was a farmer's wife.'
She was in awe of men landing on the moon, and I
believe she would have embraced the Internet, global knowledge and
communications, too.
When I am 100 years old, I am counting on the
Internet to keep me amused, connected and still interested in life.
Here we are, all together now in the twenty-first century. The
global 'You' named as Time Magazine's Person of the
Year.
Sitting here with my beautiful, 11-year-old grand
daughter Kaylee Dawn, who is curious about everything, I can only
say, 'These are the good old days we will remember. Enjoy!
