In my life as a 20-something girl with
long blondish hair, and less responsibility, I laid the ground work
for a peaceful internal life that has carried me past middle-age
without ulcers, stroke or high blood pressure.
OK, I give some of the credit to good DNA and the healthy habits
instilled in me by strong women, who came before me.
But I also credit the dogs and cats that have shared parts of my
life.
Just watching them find just the right spot to lay down, where the
sun shines through the leaded-glass door to bath them in rainbow
colors.
And when they play, they give their whole being to running and
jumping! Everything is for the moment!
Just past the holiday season, settling into...

I just found
a yoga mat that is planet-friendly and pet-friendly!
For just over
$40, the new start-up web company, JustMyMat sells a 24-inch by 65.7-inch
'TPE Yoga Pet Serene Green' mat that is non-toxic,
biodegradable, recyclable, and easy to clean.
At no
additional charge, the yoga pet mat is prepared with a paw print
embroidered next to the pet's name. The company also donates 1%
of the sale to help environmental organizations worldwide (via the
1% For The Plant organization.)
'There
are many companies selling PVC mats that ruin our environment,'
said Gwen Bandes, owner and founder of the New Jersey-based web
company. 'I wanted to
offer a yoga mat that was both unique, and friendly...

Kanab, Utah -- It was the first evening of a late summer retreat at Best Friends Animal Society for a small group of religious leaders from around the country and beyond. Kris Haley, manager of multifaith outreach for Best Friends' conveys the story.
Feeling particularly inspired one of them, Rev. Michael Bruner, professor of religion at AzuzaPacificUniversity, jotted down some ideas for the preamble to a proclamation to which the group hopes thousands of faith leaders from many countries will eventually add their names.
The sanctuary, at the heart of Southern Utah's Golden Circle of national parks, specializes in helping difficult to place homeless animals. On any given day, the...

I have had wonderful luck over the past 20 plus
years, leaving dogs home alone... Here's what I've learned.
In the beginning, puppies need a lot of attention just to become
"house safe." But I have been able to make a big effort,
usually over one long weekend to get them trained to ONLY go to the
bathroom outside. As a kennel owner recently wrote, take the puppy
outside via the same door and spend 15 minutes with them every
hour... praising them when they "do their business" and
NEVER rubbing their nose in accidents, etc.
Then, the main thing is to be sure they are used to
being in their crate as a "comfort and safe spot" that
has lots of favorite toys...

The details are enough to make every animal lover
cry: dogs being slammed to the ground, hung, drowned, shot and
electrocuted. Unbelievable!
It becomes all too clear that the brutal sport of dog fighting,
although illegal, still exists in this country.
Indictment Proceedings
As the National Football League struggles to make the right
decisions in response to allegations that star quarterback Michael
Vick has been involved in dog fighting, we as pet lovers wonder
what it will take to rid this country of such a heinous
activity.
Federal prosecutors will attempt to prove Vick's life as a
rising-star athlete (with million-dollar endorsements and $130
million pro-football contract) closely...

Whether you are vacationing at home or on the road
with pets this summer, be sure to keep your pets cool when the
weather gets hot!
o Never leave your pet in a parked car, which can
reach 120 degrees in a matter of minutes.
o Exercise your dog in the early morning or evening when it is
cooler.
o Have fresh, cool water available at all times.
o Ensure your pet has a shaded area available while outside.
o Be aware that older, overweight, thick-coated, or flat-faced
breeds are more likely to overheat.
o Heat stress signs include heavy panting, glazed eyes, rapid
pulse, and unsteadiness, staggering gait, vomiting or a deep red or
purple tongue.
o Just like you, dogs can burn the pads of their...

This past year - the Chinese Year of the Dog - we have ironically
lost a record number of these beloved creatures.
In some cases, we may have watched them suffer and
die. This truth is like an elephant in our living room that no one
wants to talk about. Don't even mention what happened. It's
too sad.
From this corner, I want to share exerts from a
sermon presented at Prairie Unitarian Universalist Church in
Parker, Colorado by Nancy Cronk, an interfaith animal chaplain. I
believe she speaks for many of us….
'Animal Ministry is about people and the
remarkable, spiritual and unique relationships we have with
animals…
'We live in a time when most of us cannot
imagine our...

OK, I am easily amused, what can I say?
I am reading the account of an 'ulti-mutt' pet party in the
English version of the Bombay Times and I am, as you would say in
Internet language ROFL, rolling on the floor laughing.
Lost in Translation?
Maybe it's the more formalized English used by people in
India… or maybe something is not lost in translation, but
rather ADDED in the translation.
'Your pets can be called to a party too,' says the article,
published July 10. 'Make sure they are clean and 'done
up' well when they accompany you to one such special
invitation.'
If you have ever tried to communicate with a customer service
technician in India about a software issue, you will know...

They give so much to us: Our Good Dogs. Let's stop to think
about what it means to be their owner, companion and friend.
Ten Commandments for Dog
Owners
1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from
you will be painful for me. Remember that before you buy me.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me--it's crucial to my well-being.
4. Don't be angry at me for long and don't lock me up as
punishment. You have your work, your entertainment and your
friends. I have only you.
5. Be aware that no matter how you treat me, I'll never forget
it.
6. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't understand your words,
I understand your voice when it's...

My friend Bill does 'lion's breath' -
with his mouth open, exhaling all of his breath from the depths of
his abdomen - with his dog facing his face, staring into his
eyes.
Bill believes Sandy was a guru in a former life.
She has a totally gentle, accepting nature. There's so much you
can learn from a dog.
We lay together on a large quilt in the shade of a
giant oak tree on the lawn of the Cinnamon house - so named for its
color. It's August in Iowa, 1975, when people shared more of
their lives together and named their children Leif and Meadow, and
their Dobermans, Apple and Tree.
Bill's long, semi-curly brown hair blends with
Sandy's long, shaggy brown fur. We empty our thoughts and...

I need a yoga mat big enough for two: for me and my furry
companion!
In the Year of the Dog, 2006 we humans were introduced to the idea
of bonding with our pets on a physical, mental and spiritual level
via pet yoga, which only makes great sense to me. Because you know,
not every dog is a guru but every guru comes back as a dog.
What? You didn't know that? Well it's true. Think about it:
who is more relaxed -- more be-here-now?
Dogs just naturally live in the moment. My dog's daily diary
goes something like this: 7 a.m. food, my favorite thing - 8 a.m.
walk around the block with my people, my favorite thing - 9 a.m.
nap under the bed with my secret collection of socks, my favorite
thing....
