A book that I read several years ago that I have
recently revisited is Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor.
I don't find a lot to like or dislike about
this book. If you are looking for an introductory textbook on
behavior modification and positive reinforcement, this book will
fit the bill.
If you are looking for techniques that will help
you train your dog, you won't find much here. I do admire Ms.
Pryor for her pioneering work in marine mammal training and
appreciate the impetus she has given us toward becoming enlightened
dog owners.
COMMENT:
I would first suggest Lads before the Wind by Karen Pryor for the
actual information, history and development of this type of
training.
The book is out of print, but can be found on the
secondary market. It was written
years before the book that Don Lloyd mentioned.
Again, not so much a "dog training" book,
as a method and style of training and
behavior modification, reinforcement, and the problems they
encountered, it is
fascinating to learn how this began.
